what does it say about us as a culture that most of our microwaves have a dedicated popcorn button

i dont know but whatever it says, its magnified by literally every bag of popcorn saying “don’t use the popcorn button”

I never knew this, so I just looked into it: the popcorn button is supposedly used to tell your microwave to detect humidity from the popcorn in order to sense it’s ready or fully popped. But therein lies the problem: most microwaves don’t have humidity sensors, and cannot tell when something is burning. So that button went from cool, semi-futuristic popcorn wizardry to… another button that sets a specific time.
